MP: International leaders must do all they can to prevent wider conflict
Responding to news of the Prime Minister’s visit, John said,
“Needless to say, I utterly condemn the heinous attacks carried out by Hamas terrorists on Israeli citizens. The wanton slaughter and hostage-taking of civilians was utterly shocking, and the Prime Minister was right to express his sympathy with the people and Government of Israel. I also commend him for visiting Israel today. His Majesty the King has also struck the right tone in his statements, mixing sympathy and solidarity with warmth.”
“These terrorist killings awakened the darkest memories of the pogroms and the Holocaust, and my strong support goes out to the British Jewish community. Many of our citizens will know people affected by the attacks, and are feeling fearful of their security here. I am pleased the Government has increased resources to protect and reassure our Jewish community, and condemn all antisemitic acts.”
“Israel, like all countries, has the absolute right to defend herself and her citizens. However, when responding to these outrages, she must ensure that her response is proportionate, and try to ensure the minimum loss of innocent civilian life even though this may not be easy. This includes upholding the flow of humanitarian support to innocent Gazans and facilitating their exit from the area. For its part, Hamas should release all hostages unharmed.”
“The chances of a wider conflict are all too apparent. It is incumbent on all international leaders to act responsibly and do all they can they prevent this. Direct talks with regional leaders are of the utmost importance, and I hope the Prime Minister’s visit, like those of the US President and German Chancellor, will achieve this. Let us hope that cool heads prevail: the eyes of the world are on the Middle East.”
