MP: These changes would not be possible under Common Fisheries Policy
The Government has announced plans to introduce a world-class system of fisheries management, drawing upon the best-available science and expertise of our fishing communities to ensure our fish stocks are healthy and sustainable.
The first six Fisheries Management Plans are being published today, including plans for the stocks of bass, king scallops, crab and lobster. There will also be a boost for small vessels (under ten metres) by removing a cap on the amount of quota they can use, opening up more income for smaller businesses – these are changes only possible since leaving the EU.
A consultation is also being launched into remote electronic monitoring in English waters, which will check the management plans are being adhered to. This technology will gather data while boats are at sea, including on the amount, size and species of fish being caught – to ensure fish stocks are closely monitored and providing important data for conversation and fisheries management purposes.
John said,
“The UK has some of the best fishing grounds in the world, which provide employment to many coastal communities across the country. The set of measures announced today would not be possible if we were still a member of the EU, and the fishing community and I commend the Government for seizing these opportunities as we re-establish ourselves as an independent coastal state.”
