MP: Britain will remain generous at providing refuge
This evening the House of Commons will vote on the Second Reading of the Illegal Immigration Bill which, in conjunction with other efforts, aims to put a stop to illegal Channel crossings in small boats. John Baron MP will vote in support of the Bill.
John said,
“The volume of illegal small boat arrivals is overwhelming our asylum system, all of whom have travelled through multiple safe countries where they could and should have claimed asylum. Accommodating asylum seekers in hotels costs the taxpayer £6 million a day, and when we try to remove them our generous laws are used in ways that were never envisaged to prevent removal. There is a clear need for reform.”
“In addition to signing new agreements with the French and Albanian governments and taking on hundreds of new immigration staff, the Illegal Immigration Bill aims to put a stop to the illegal Channel crossings by deterring illegal migration. It will do this by ensuring that those who enter the UK illegally will be removed to a safe country, with routes of appeal narrowed, with a permanent bar to lawful re-entry to the UK or from gaining British citizenship.”
“The Government is confident that these measures do not conflict with our international obligations, and it is important to remember that Britain has an excellent record at providing refuge for those fleeing persecution and violence. Since 2015, Britain has offered safety to nearly 480,000 people from across the world using our global routes as well as country-specific routes for Syria, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Ukraine. This approach will of course continue.”
