MP: 1922 Defence Committee Report now being acted upon
While speaking in Poland today the Prime Minister formally committed a Conservative Government to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence in 2030, with a graded increase each year equal to an extra £75 billion over the next six years. This follows on from the major injection of funding in 2019, and defence spending has increased by £41 billion since the beginning of the Parliament.
John said,
“I welcome this firm commitment from the Prime Minister to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP in 2030. This is excellent news, sends the right message to allies and potential adversaries alike, and paves the way for other NATO allies to follow our lead. As Chair of the 1922 Defence Committee, we have been advocating an increase spend for some time.”
“Defence has been neglected for too long, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine has reminded us all of the importance and virtue of defence. Coupled with a possibly ambivalent attitude towards NATO following the US election this year, there are strong reasons for European governments to bolster their Armed Forces.”
“Following the decision in Washington to provide further aid to Kyiv, it is good news that Britain will also be supporting the Ukrainians with a further £500 million package of support. This will provide urgently required ammunition, air defence and offensive capabilities which the Ukrainians need to protect their people and liberate their country.”
