MP highlights investment in reducing storm overflows
The Government recently launched its ‘Plan for Water’, which will help to ensure cleaner and more plentiful water for our communities. It will build upon previous work to improve water quality and cleanliness, and will include measures to tackle pollution as well as to reduce the pressure on our water resources. Water companies will bring forward £1.6 billion in spending on improving water infrastructure, in large part to address storm overflows, and fines from water companies will be reinvested in a new Water Restoration Fund to support schemes to protect waterways. The Government will also bring forward proposals to ban the sale of plastic-containing wet wipes.
John said,
“I welcome the steps in the ‘Plan for Water’ to improve water quality, to increase investment in infrastructure to address sewage discharges and to bring in tighter regulation and enforcement on water companies. This is in addition to OFWAT’s recent modification of water company licences to require the companies to take account of environmental performance when deciding whether to pay dividends – including when awarding bonuses to senior executives.”
