MP: Games showcase the best of Britain
Today marks the start of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The opening ceremony is expected to attract a global television audience of over 1 billion people.
The predicted economic boost to Britain provided by the investment in the games includes the creation of 40,000 new jobs and volunteering opportunities, £38 million investment in innovation programmes, £24 million in business and tourism programmes, as well as new and upgraded sporting facilities.
John said:
“I very much welcome the opening of the Commonwealth Games today which will bring 6,500 athletes and officials from 72 Commonwealth nations and territories to Birmingham. This is testament to the success of the Commonwealth as a whole, which this year has welcomed Gabon and Togo.
“Large sporting events such as this showcase Britain at its best – we are known for our ability to stage such major international events and to celebrate genuine sporting achievements.”
