MP: More trees improve environment and air quality
The Government is spending £44.2 million to expand woodlands by planting millions more trees. As well as providing employment, this investment will create larger, well-designed and more diverse woodlands better able to withstand climate change, wildfires and storms, as well as reducing flood risk in vulnerable areas. These woodlands will also provide sustainable British-grown timber and provide more places for nature and biodiversity to thrive. It is intended that 2,300 hectares of trees will be planted with this investment, and it is estimated that this planting will see 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide absorbed by 2050.
John said,
“I welcome this major expansion of our woodlands - £44 million buys a lot of trees, and it is good news that the planned woodlands will be diverse in order to guard against the increasing threat of arboreal diseases. Greening our environment by increasing the number of trees will also improve air quality, boost soil retention by reducing wind and rain erosion and help to prevent flooding.”
