MP: Compassion is important amongst spending cuts
At Prime Minister’s Questions today in the House of Commons, John asked,
“Mr Speaker, there have been a number of low points recently, including the Republic Ireland’s football team’s singing of pro-IRA songs last week in their dressing room. We should never forget the sacrifice of those who tried to keep the peace during the Troubles.”
“Closer to home, recent events mean that our spending will be more constrained than previously thought. I urge the Prime Minister to ensure we retain compassion in politics when dealing with these decisions, including maintaining the link between benefits and inflation. Will she do so?”
The Prime Minister responded that Conservatives are compassionate and that steps would always be taken to protect the vulnerable. She also said that the Chancellor had heard John’s words about benefits ahead of his Statement on 31st October.
John said afterwards,
“I am pleased that the Prime Minister intends to protect the vulnerable. Therefore, having today announced the Government is retaining the pensions ‘Triple Lock’, she should follow this up by maintaining the link between benefits and inflation.”
