MP: we must protect people’s lives and livelihoods
This evening MPs will vote on amendments to the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Bill. This legislation aims to ensure minimum levels of service across essential public services to ensure that people’s lives and livelihoods are not put at risk from industrial action. Once tonight’s stages are completed, the Bill will move on for consideration in the House of Lords.
John said,
“It is right that in certain areas, such as ambulance cover and other public services, the right to strike is balanced against the public’s requirements for potentially life-saving care – this is an approach endorsed by the International Labour Organisation. France, Spain, Ireland and Italy all have such legislation, and it is reasonable that we take similar steps to protect people’s lives and livelihoods.”
Notes to Editors:
- This legislation will ensure minimum services across health services, fire and rescue services, education services, transport services, border security and decommissioning of nuclear installations and management of radioactive waste and spent fuel.
