MP looks forward to seeing details of the deal
The EU and British Government are poised to unveil details of the deal they have been negotiating to resolve the problems caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol and its implementation. This has caused difficulties in the movement of goods inside the UK and ultimately led to the suspension of the Northern Ireland Assembly. John Baron MP recently spoke to the Prime Minister about these negotiations.
John said,
“I had a good conversation with the Prime Minister regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol talks, and am supportive of the Government’s overall position in trying to find a solution. Whilst the devil will be in the detail, it appears the EU has agreed to our suggestions of red/green lanes for goods, in return for ensuring that the ECJ may have a role to play if arbitration were needed.”
“Whilst the issue of dual jurisdiction makes for complexities, we should also remember that it also presents business and inward investment opportunities which could greatly benefit the people of Northern Ireland.”
“Key concerns include how divergence between UK and EU Single Market rules will be accommodated over time, as well as the issue of democratic consent from voters in Northern Ireland when it comes to EU Single Market regulations. There is also the question of whether the deal sufficiently assuages the concerns of the DUP and unionist community to get the power-sharing devolved government up and running once more.”
“The Government is approaching the negotiations in the right way and the right spirit – let us hope the EU continues to reciprocate. I look forward to seeing the details of the deal in due course.”
