MP: Parliament must endorse Committee’s findings
This morning the Committee of Privileges issued its report into whether the former Prime Minister, Rt Hon Boris Johnson, knowingly misled the House of Commons over what happened at No 10 during the lockdowns. John Baron MP withdrew his support from Boris Johnson in May 2022 because he considered the scale of the rule-breaking uncovered by the Sue Gray and Police investigations made it incredible that Boris Johnson did not know what had happened.
John said,
“The Committee’s findings reflect the reason I withdrew my support from Boris Johnson in May 2022. He knowingly misled Parliament. This is very serious. No-one wants to see a former Prime Minister in such disgrace, but our Parliamentary system, the beating heart of our democracy, depends on Ministers telling the truth at the Despatch Box. If they don’t, we are on a very slippery slope.”
“Those who served on the Committee deserve our thanks for a diligent and no doubt at times difficult job, which they carried out at the request of the House. The Committee was set the task on a Government motion when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister, which passed through the Commons unopposed.”
“It is now essential that Parliament is given the ability to endorse the findings of the Committee within a reasonable timeframe. The Members of the Committee have done their job; now it is time for MPs to do theirs and, as is customary, to accept the report without a division.”
