MP: Fundamentals of economy remain strong
At PMQs this afternoon, John Baron MP asked,
“With both the OBR and ONS confirming the British economy is substantially larger than they estimated even a few months ago, does he agree with me that Britain’s detractors have been proven wrong yet again, and will he do all he can to ensure our employment rate remains at the present record levels, given unemployment is a great social evil?”
The Prime Minister responded that John made an excellent point, with many organisations, including the IMF and the OECD, last year also incorrectly forecasting a British economic recession this year. Nissan’s recent commitment to the UK and the £30 billion of fresh foreign investment in the UK is good for Britain and good for employment.
John said afterwards,
“A narrative has developed that the British economy has performed uniquely badly in recent years, which recent upgrades to the growth statistics has shown to be wrong. The fundamentals of our economy remain strong, with unemployment being well below the EU average.”
